Absence

Sometimes the beauty of an object is not in what is seen but by what is unseen. We have been at the National AIDS Memorial Grove for over a half-hour before it strikes me. First, this place contains an enormity of unoccupied space. Second, that in spite of that emptiness, there is the presence of many unseen souls.

I recognized Falcon Studios as my favorite porn provider in olden days
I found the large memorial from Falcon Studios somewhat apropos. Many an afternoon in my twenties was spent watching 8mm to videocassette conversions of old Falcon flicks, featuring butch 70s men in outdoor activities. Perhaps some of those films were done here in Golden Gate Park.

If you're quiet, you can almost hear them, among the trees, cruising...
In and out of the trees, I see the ghosts of a generation of men. Meeting, making liasons, sharing phone numbers, talking about recipes or home decor, often not saying a word at all. Companions, all of them. Can it be twenty-five years since those days began to end?

Shhhhhhh... keep your voice down. You don't want to disturb them.
